What is a Mala?
Malas have been worn for thousands of years by yogis and spiritual seekers all around the world. They are used to set intentions, mediate, or simply wear for beauty and positive energy! They encourage us to pause and breath, sending us into the now, encouraging us to take a moment for self-care and compassion.
The word “Mala” refers to the “Japa Mala,” which is a garland used in Japa meditation. It is a strand of 108 beads used for counting your recitations of a mantra, affirmation or chant.
Using Your Mala
To use your mala, hold it in your right hand, draped over your middle finger. Sit tall, in alignment and start to breath deep and slow. Recite your mantra and with every repetition turn a bead with your thumb. Continue to focus on your mantra and turn your beads. Once you have turned all 108 beads, you have found your guru bead. Say a thank you to all of your teachers who have brought you to this point of your journey to end your Japa meditation.
If you are new to meditation, then having a mala handy (literally) will help you to build concentration. We admit that staying focused on one thing at any moment in time can be a challenge. So be kind to yourself, make it a daily practice, stick to it and good things will come.
Choosing a Mala
When choosing a mala, make sure you chose one that speaks to you. There are many reasons that we could be drawn to a specific mala- the colour or stones, the beauty, the intention or intuition. Ultimately, if you see a mala, and it stays put on your mind, that is probably the mala for you. There are many different meanings that each gemstone, wood or seed will hold, but the meaning you give your mala will be the greatest. Try to associate your mala with the positive energy you build during your meditation. Take that energy with you by wearing your mala or displaying it in a sacred place. I hope you found this helpful in choosing the best mala for you!
